A Sweet & Simple DIY Valentine Tag with Chalk Couture
There’s just something special about handmade home décor—especially when it carries a message straight from the heart. Today I’m sharing a brand-new Chalk Couture DIY tag project I created using soft romantic colors, layered textures, and one of my favorite finishing touches: a Tim Holtz locket charm.
This piece is perfect for Valentine’s Day decorating, gifting, or adding to a cozy shelf or tiered tray. Best of all? It’s simple, forgiving, and absolutely beginner-friendly.
The Inspiration
I wanted this project to feel vintage, heartfelt, and a little nostalgic—like a love note saved forever. The tag shape immediately set the tone, and the phrase “You Will Forever Be My Always” felt like the perfect sentiment for a handmade keepsake.
By starting with a bright white painted base and layering Chalk Paste colors on top, the finished piece has a soft contrast with just the right amount of warmth and charm.

Step-by-Step: How I Made It
1. Paint the Wood Tag
I started by painting the wood tag with Bright White Chalk Paste, creating a clean, crisp base for the design. Once painted, I let it dry completely before moving on to the transfer.
This bright white background really helps the lettering and details stand out beautifully.
2. Prep & Place the Transfer
Before applying the transfer, I fuzzed it on a cloth to reduce the stickiness. Then I centered the Be My Always transfer on the tag and smoothed it down, making sure all the lettering and details were well adhered.
3. Add the Chalk Paste
This is where the project really comes to life:
-
Peony was used for the flowing script details to give it a soft, romantic feel.
-
Cabernet added richness and depth to the main wording and heart accents.
-
Bright White was layered in select areas to keep everything light and balanced.
Don’t worry about perfection here—slight texture and variation add to the handmade charm.
diy 4. Peel & Reveal
Carefully peel the transfer back while the paste is still wet. This is always my favorite part!
Allow the tag to dry completely before adding embellishments.
5. Add the Finishing Touch
Once everything was dry, I added a Tim Holtz locket charm at the top of the tag with ribbon. That little metal detail instantly elevates the piece and gives it a keepsake, heirloom feel.
